Irene's Story

Irene's Story

Every Christian has struggles trying to be the person they know they should be, but if you have ever felt that you were struggling in vain and were ready to give up, then you‘ll understand just how I was feeling some months ago.

Paul‘s words to the Romans - “I don‘t understand what I do. What I want to do I don‘t do and what I hate I do” must have been written for me. Eventually, one night when it came to my prayer time, I had no energy or even any desire to pray. All I was able to do was admit that I couldn‘t do it any more, and that I was handing control over to Him, who was in control of all, and asked that He would do whatever He had to.

The next day I was aware as the day wore on that I felt light hearted and as though a heavy weight had been lifted of me. I thought about Christian in John Bunyan‘s story “Pilgrim‘s Progress”, and of how his burden had rolled off his back when he saw the Cross. That was just how I felt. Probably the best word to describe it is “FREE”. I had known for years the work that Jesus did for us on the Cross, but never before actually experiencing it. I also came to know the truth of John‘s words, “when the Son sets you free, you are free in-deed.” To this day I still feel the power of these words. Freedom! What joy!

I have come to realise that my struggles with today‘s sins are enough for me to cope with, and just knowing that I must bring them to Jesus gives such hope in the midst of my struggles.

Like many people, I find it hard to talk about personal experiences like this, but I hope that someone going through the same struggles is encouraged that they are not alone and that Jesus can bring that freedom to them too.

I pray that God would bless you all, and be especially close to those whose days are dark just now.

Burdens Are Lifted At Calvary by John M. Moore

Days are filled with sorrow and care,

Hearts are lonely and drear;

Burdens are lifted at Calvary,

Jesus is very near.

Burdens are lifted at Calvary,

Calvary, Calvary,

Burdens are lifted at Calvary,

Jesus is very near.

Cast your care on Jesus today,

Leave your worry and fear;

Burdens are lifted at Calvary,

Jesus is very near.

Troubled soul, the Saviour can see,

Ev'ry heartache and tear;

Burdens are lifted at Calvary

Jesus is very near.
